BUILD THE SHIELD
The Weddington High School Athletic Booster Club is excited to launch our newest capital campaign, Build the Shield!
The School has seen a 62% increase in student population since opening in 2000.
In the 21 years of existence, there have been no capital improvement projects made to enlarge the space, even though the school has grown by 62%.
Our 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is seeking funding to build a first class building addition to our beautiful campus. Built in 1999 and opening our doors in 2000, we had an opening student population of 720 students. Fast forward to 2023, our current enrollment is 1,863. That is a 62% increase from our opening student population! In the 23 years of existence, there have been no building enhancements to our current athletic space, even with our booming enrollment over the years.
Our cheer, wrestling, basketball and volleyball programs all share gym space some even splitting the gym to have shared practice space. During the year, we have teams that may practice up until 9:00pm in order for us to accommodate each team.
By building this addition, we create a safe and designated practice space for our cheer and wrestling teams. Each program will have their own 50x65 practice area that is fully enclosed and ventilated. This will provide these two teams a designated space for their practices each and every day, eliminating the needs for the teams to use the auxiliary gym. This in turn opens the auxiliary gym space for volleyball and basketball to hold practices in a safe space. Currently, the auxiliary gym floor is lined with cheer and wrestling mats. By creating these two teams their own area, the court will be clear and free of these mats, providing an even safer competition area.
Our current weight room is a 54x27 space, which is a part of the schools original build. Our athletic teams use it each morning, then the space is utilized for classes between 8am-3pm, where our class size can exceed 35 students per block. Given the space, we can only house nine racks and two racks of free weights. The proposed weight room area will be built in an 83x34 area (2,822 sq.ft.), nearly doubling our current weight room (1,458 sq.ft.). This will allow weight room classes enrollment to increase and allow more of our teams to utilize teams lifting together, rather than splitting into smaller groups.
